Anatomy of the Reef

Located along Ehukai Beach Park, Banzai Pipeline is renowned as the gold standard of barrel riding. The reef structure consists of three distinct shelves: First Reef, Second Reef, and Third Reef.

When long-period swells travel thousands of miles across the North Pacific, they abruptly hit the shallow table reef of First Reef. This causes the wave to throw its lip violently forward, creating a wide, hollow cylinder.

Navigating Backdoor vs. Pipeline

Depending on swell direction, the wave breaks left as "Pipeline" or right as "Backdoor." Swells with more west in them (280°-300°) yield wide lefts, while straight north swells (340°-360°) make Backdoor open up with hollow right-hand barrels.

Safety & Local Rules

Pipeline is one of the most dangerous waves on Earth. The coral bottom is laced with cavernous lava tubes and sharp overhangs. Surfers must respect local priority systems, exercise rigorous physical conditioning, and possess deep experience in heavy water environments.
