Pe'ahi (Jaws): The Titan of Big Wave Surfing

Break Type Deep Trench Reef
Best Swell Angle NW to NNW (310°-340°)
Optimal Wave Height 30 ft to 60+ ft
Required Equipment Rhino Guns & Safety Vests

Deep Trench Hydrodynamics

The extreme energy of Pe'ahi comes from an underwater trench off the coast of northern Maui. As northwest swells approach, deep water abruptly funnels into a shallow reef ledge, bending the energy into a massive, concentrated wedge.

Tow-In vs Paddle Era

Originally pioneered in the 1990s as a tow-in break with jet skis, elite big wave surfers in recent years have pushed boundaries by paddling into these monster waves with 10ft+ "rhino gun" surfboards, setting new standards in watermanship.

Safety Logistics

Surfing Pe'ahi requires inflatable safety vests, dedicated jet ski rescue operators, and spotters along the cliffs. Wipeouts here can submerge surfers into high-pressure oceanic depths for multiple consecutive wave sets.
